What is Brain-Computer Interface Training (BCI)?
Everyone’s brain produces electricity, measured as brain waves at different frequencies. These different brain waves reflect different mental states. People with attention difficulties produce an abundance of slow waves and less fast wave activity. A burst of slow wave activity during a task represents a “tuning out” from that task; a moment of distractibility.
Tuning out is reduced by training to reduce these slow waves and thereby inattention, fidgeting and hyperactivity are controlled. Concentration is improved by training to increase the production of the faster brain wave activity.
Training is facilitated via a Brain-computer interface (BCI) (also known as EEG-Biofeedback), which uses a computer to feedback information about your brain wave activity. The feeding back of information to the client about ‘how’ they are thinking (their different mental states including focus, concentration, attention, awareness, distractibility, under-arousal, anxiety and other states) enables them to learn self-regulation and gain control over these mental states. This improved self control allows one to increase efficient learning and utilize a calm, relaxed and focused approach to work.

Facts Regarding Attentional Difficulties, Assessment & Training:
• By conservative estimates, 3 - 9% of school aged children are affected by attention difficulties1.
• 6% (3.5 million) American school aged children are prescribed psycho-stimulant medications annually with numerous potential negative side effects (stunting of growth, headache, decreased appetite, increased blood pressure, nausea).2
• 38 peer reviewed and published studies in the past 30 years support a common QEEG trait of brain wave “slowing” observed in people with attention difficulties compared to normal controls.3
• Classification accuracy of attentional difficulties using QEEG is 94%.5
• BCI training is shown to be effective, medication-free, long-term treatment for people with attention and organizational difficulties. 4,5,6
• American Academy of Pediatrics (2004) stated “brain wave analysis techniques will help document the neurologic and behavioral nature of ADD”.7
